San Juan Del Sur Beach Guide
Your complete family guide to the beaches of San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua - from the best surf spots to the most kid-friendly shores along this stunning Pacific coastline.
San Juan Del Sur is a charming beach town nestled along Nicaragua’s southwestern Pacific coast, and it quickly became one of our favorite places in the country. What was once a quiet fishing village has grown into a vibrant hub for surfers, families, and travelers seeking an authentic Central American beach experience without the crowds and prices of neighboring Costa Rica.
Getting to San Juan Del Sur
San Juan Del Sur is about a two-hour drive from Managua’s international airport. We rented a car at the airport, which gave us the flexibility to explore the surrounding beaches at our own pace - something we’d highly recommend, especially with kids. The drive south along the Pan-American Highway is straightforward, and the town itself is easy to navigate once you arrive.
The Town Beach
The main bay of San Juan Del Sur is a beautiful crescent-shaped beach framed by hills on either side. The famous Christ of the Mercy statue watches over the bay from the northern hillside. The town beach is perfect for families - the water is calm, there are plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance, and the kids loved playing in the gentle waves.
The beach is lined with small restaurants and bars where you can grab fresh ceviche, fried fish, or a cold Toña (the local beer) while keeping an eye on the kids. Sunset here is absolutely magical - the sky turns shades of orange and pink that reflect off the calm bay waters.
Playa Maderas
About 20 minutes north of town, Playa Maderas is the go-to surf beach in the area. The waves here are consistent and suitable for beginners to intermediate surfers. We took surf lessons as a family, and the instructors were incredibly patient with the kids. Board rentals are affordable, and there are a few beachside restaurants serving cold drinks and simple meals.
The road to Maderas is unpaved and can be rough, so a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Alternatively, shuttle services run from town throughout the day.
Playa Hermosa
True to its name (“Beautiful Beach”), Playa Hermosa is a stunning stretch of sand about 15 minutes south of town. It’s less crowded than Maderas and offers a more relaxed vibe. The waves can be bigger here, so it’s better suited for experienced surfers, but the beach itself is gorgeous for walking and exploring.
Where We Stayed
We stayed at a hillside villa overlooking the bay, and the views were absolutely incredible. Waking up to panoramic ocean views and watching the sunset from our private pool was a highlight of the entire trip. The kids spent hours in the pool while we soaked in the scenery.
There are accommodation options for every budget in San Juan Del Sur - from backpacker hostels to luxury villas. For families, we’d recommend renting a house or villa through Airbnb, as it gives you more space and the ability to cook meals when the kids need something familiar.
Food & Dining
The food scene in San Juan Del Sur punches well above its weight. Fresh seafood is the star - we had some of the best ceviche of our lives here. Local spots serve traditional Nicaraguan dishes like gallo pinto, nacatamales, and vigorón at very reasonable prices.
For a treat, head to one of the hillside restaurants for sunset dinner with ocean views. The kids were always welcome, and most restaurants had options they’d enjoy.
Tips for Families
San Juan Del Sur is genuinely family-friendly. Here are a few things we learned:
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen - the sun is intense, and you’ll want to protect both your family and the ocean
- Cash is king - while some places accept cards, many smaller shops and restaurants are cash-only
- Stay hydrated - the heat and humidity can sneak up on you, especially with active kids
- Book surf lessons in advance during peak season (December–March)
- Rent a car - it makes beach-hopping with kids so much easier than relying on shuttles
Our Verdict
San Juan Del Sur captured our hearts. It’s the kind of place where you plan to stay for three days and end up staying for a week. The combination of beautiful beaches, warm people, incredible sunsets, and affordable family-friendly experiences makes it a must-visit destination in Nicaragua. We can’t wait to go back.
